The Eco-Driving Games: gamify best practices

Taking inspiration from the eco-driving challenge organised by Heppner’s Rhône-Alpes region in 2023, eco-driving games were rolled out nationwide by the Group in 2024.
Included as part of the Group’s sustainability drive, the eco-driving games pursue a two-fold goal:

  • Reduce the Group’s fuel consumption and, consequently, CO2 emissions.
  • Improve road safety and stress management for drivers.

Data tracking:
Using the Masternaut boxes (Michelin Connected Fleet) installed on the vehicles, each branch was assessed on three key indicators:

  • Smoothness: avoid abrupt accelerations and decelerations.
  • Safety: limit speeding.
  • Environment: limit waiting time with the engine idling.

Local mobilisation and real-time monitoring
Before the official launch in April 2024, the branches had a month’s preparation to analyse their data and set up local outreach strategies. Provisional rankings were shared on Teams throughout the challenge to motivate the teams and track progress in real time.

Results:
The results are both motivating for the participants and instructive on this pilot scale:
6 winning branches: Saint-Etienne, Annecy, Pau, Lyon, Le Mans and Brest.
A reduction in fuel consumption equivalent to savings of €117,000

over 8 months: -9% in biogas consumption, -3% in diesel or HVO100 consumption.
A reduction in CO2 emissions of about 215 tonnes through more responsible driving.
– The health benefits of smoother driving: less stress at the wheel and fewer musculoskeletal problems.
– €200 offered to each driver in the winning branches.

Building on this success, the Eco-Driving Games will be repeated in 2025 to take the benefits to more people and include Heppner’s international branches in the scheme.

“Heppner is committed to improving its practices and reducing its environmental footprint. Our branch is one of six winners of the eco-driving challenge; it is a tribute to our drivers, each one of whom is a role model in their day-to-day work. In 2025, we will continue to build on this momentum together to make deliveries even more efficient and environmentally friendly. Every gesture counts, and our drivers are our ambassadors!”
